Recently, the Jiangzhi’s technical department used the popular 710 Bingba cup as a testing carrier to conduct a complete comparison of the mainstream surface process combinations of spray painting+3D and spray painting+3D on the market for insulated cups. The verification was carried out around core dimensions such as production process, coating quality, service life, production cost, and wear resistance. The advantages, disadvantages, and applicable scenarios of the two processes were sorted out using the measured data, making it convenient for business to accurately recommend process solutions and optimize product quality and delivery efficiency when connecting with customers.
| Comparison Item | Powder Coating + 3D Printing | Spray Painting + 3D Printing |
| Production Process | Plastic powder coating at 190°C; no secondary baking required after 3D printing to pass cross-cut adhesion test | Paint spraying at 110°C; secondary baking is mandatory after 3D printing, and dedicated 3D ink is required to pass cross-cut test |
| Coating Thickness | 60–120 microns | 20–40 microns |
| Leveling Effect | Naturally tiny granular texture on surface; can be polished into glossy smooth finish, yet inherent water ripple texture cannot be eliminated completely | Smooth and even paint surface with better leveling performance than powder coating, delivering delicate glossy appearance |
| Service Life | 5–10 years indoors with no peeling; over 2 years under frequent outdoor use | Only 1–3 years of indoor service life; prone to abrasion and aging under frequent outdoor use |
| Production Loss | Low rejection rate, high yield & fast delivery, ideal for mass production | High scrap rate, frequent rework during mass production, likely to delay delivery schedules |
| Production Cost | Regular powder coating: ¥1.35Gloss powder coating: ¥1.68 | Single paint coating: ¥1.2 plus extra ¥0.2 for 3D bakingTo achieve the same wear resistance as powder coating, special paint above ¥2.5 with multi-layer spraying is required |
| Wear & Water Resistance | Scratch-resistant, wear-resistant, resistant to boiling & washing; 3D patterns adhere firmly without peeling/fading from collision & friction | Ordinary paint is far less wear-resistant than powder coating; soft paint film causes 3D edges to curl and fall off easily; slight collision leads to paint peeling & pattern loss |
Spray coating belongs to powder high-temperature solidification molding, with a dense and hard coating, strong adhesion, and the characteristics of scratch resistance, drop resistance, and water immersion without deterioration;
Spray painting, on the other hand, is formed by low-temperature air drying. The coating is thin and soft, with weak natural adhesion. It is easy to peel off the paint after daily scraping, and long-term use will gradually age and peel, resulting in a significant difference in service life.
The biggest advantage of spray painting is that the paint surface is smooth and delicate, and the finished product has a higher aesthetic value, suitable for products that pursue short-term beauty and have a short service life;
The spray coating comes with a fine frosted particle texture. Although it cannot achieve the ultimate mirror smoothness, its strength lies in its durability. It can be used for daily cold drinks, washing, and outdoor carrying without worrying about wear and tear.
Simply calculating the basic unit price, spray painting may seem cheaper, but ordinary spray painting has poor wear resistance. If customers want spray painted products to have the same durable effect as spray painting, they need to replace expensive special paint and increase the number of spray layers, which will actually exceed the overall cost of spray painting technology.
1. Prioritize spray painting+3D : The customer's product is designed for outdoor use, and the water cup needs to be washed frequently. The product is mainly durable and long-lasting, and does not fall off. It is recommended to use this process for long-term repurchase thermos cups, taking into account both quality and long-term reputation;
2. Choose spray painting+3D : Customers who focus on short-term gift sales, pursue the ultimate smooth appearance, do not care about long-term paint peeling problems, and have a short usage cycle can use spray painting+3D technology for orders.
This process test clearly divided the adaptation scenarios of two processes. When coordinating customer orders in the future, business colleagues can flexibly match processes based on customer positioning, usage scenarios, and budget requirements. On the premise of controlling production costs, targeted improvement of product durability or appearance quality can not only meet the needs of different customers, but also further enhance the market competitiveness of our insulated cup products.
