Coastline Protection Action

In May 2025, container ship MSC Elsa 3 sank off the southern Indian coast causing the release of tens of shipping containers worth of plastic pellets/nurdles amongst other harmful and hazardous materials to be discarded into our marine ecosystems.

This has since been declared a National Environmental Crisis.

This is not the first time this has happened - in 2021, the X-Press Pearl is another container ship that caught fire and sank off the coast of Colombo also releasing harmful chemicals and plastic nurdles into Southern Sri Lankan waters.

These environmental disasters have been the cause of massive loss in marine ecosystems, as well as to the livelihoods of fisherman.

Seeing this first hand in Sri Lanka has been shocking - it is unlike anything I have experienced. It is one of those things as a conservationist that is just impossible to wrap your head around.

BUT Volunteer groups have dedicated so much time and energy into cleaning the beaches of Sri Lanka and the difference shows
